Work as a Form of Personal Refinement

O termo Kung Fu (功夫) pode ser traduzido literalmente do chinês como “trabalho habilidoso”, “esforço realizado” ou “tempo e dedicação aplicados a uma habilidade”. Ele é composto por dois caracteres:

The term Kung Fu (功夫) can be literally translated from Chinese as “skillful work,” “effort made,” or “time and dedication applied to a skill.” It is composed of two characters:

功 (Kung): significa “trabalho”, “mérito” ou “realização”.

功 (Kung): means “work,” “merit,” or “achievement.”

夫 (Fū): originalmente refere-se a “homem” ou “indivíduo”, mas em conjunto com o primeiro caractere, ganha o sentido de “tempo gasto”.

夫 (Fū): originally refers to “man” or “individual,” but when combined with the first character, it takes on the meaning of “time spent.”

Neste sentido, busca-se explicar toda a amplitude do termo, traduzindo, portanto, uma proposta para seu fim. Ou seja, Kung Fu é: “trabalho habilidoso, esforço realizado ou qualquer outra tradução que o valha”. Pessoalmente, apesar de usar traduções literais, prefiro entender que, na realidade, a melhor maneira de se apreciar o termo é fazendo seu uso. Em um primeiro momento, faz-se necessária a ajuda de um sistema, então, através de conexões com o dia a dia.

In this sense, the aim is to explain the full breadth of the term, thus translating a proposal for its purpose. In other words, Kung Fu is: “skilled work, effort exerted, or any other translation that applies.” Personally, despite using literal translations, I prefer to understand that, in reality, the best way to appreciate the term is through its application. Initially, the assistance of a system is necessary, and then it connects to everyday life.

Por exemplo, certa vez ouvi meu Si Fu, Mestre Sênior Julio Camacho, comentar que Kung Fu diz respeito a trabalho árduo. Por isso, passei a executá-lo como um trabalho dedicado e entendi que, no fim, o que desenvolve é a mestria. Por este pensamento, concluí que o que de fato se pratica é o trabalho, seja ele árduo, dedicado, meritório e realizável. A consequência disso é o nascimento de uma pessoa madura, “homem”, e se tem os frutos do tempo gasto. Mesmo porque, no que chamo de mundo prático, aquele similar ao mundo das coisas, de Platão, o que um trabalho de alto nível gera é mais trabalho, já que dá trabalho trabalhar. A mestria ou excelência ficam em volta a questões subjetivas ou alinhadas à capacidade de percepção e experiência individual.

For example, I once heard my Si Fu, Senior Master Julio Camacho, comment that Kung Fu pertains to hard work. Therefore, I began to approach it as dedicated work and understood that, in the end, what it develops is mastery. Through this line of thinking, I concluded that what is truly practiced is the work itself, whether it is arduous, dedicated, meritorious, or achievable. The consequence of this is the emergence of a mature person, a “man,” and the fruition of time well spent. After all, in what I call the practical world, akin to Plato’s world of things, high-level work generates even more work, as working takes work. Mastery or excellence revolves around subjective matters or is aligned with one’s capacity for perception and individual experience.

Em um dos encontros que fizemos no Mo Gun com o Si Fu, ficou claro para mim como o trabalho dedicado está presente de todas as formas e em todos os lugares. Basta haver o desejo de vivenciá-lo.

In one of the meetings we held at the Mo Gun with Si Fu, it became clear to me how dedicated work is present in all forms and everywhere. It only requires the desire to experience it.

Entrando no Mo Gun, Si Fu mapeava os cômodos de forma discreta. Absolutamente seguro da adequação do espaço para o momento que viveríamos naquela manhã, eu próprio tinha coordenado sua organização no dia anterior, fui pego, com certa surpresa, quando ele apontou o primeiro refinamento. Um dos itens de reverência à ancestralidade estava desalinhado com o centro da mesa. Imediatamente fiz o ajuste. A partir disso, simplesmente não paramos mais. Si Fu, a cada oportunidade, comentava sobre um item fora de lugar ou que carecia de refinamento. Em pouco tempo, tive dúvida sobre minha própria capacidade de percepção e mesmo da organização que havia realizado de forma pregressa. O auge de minha derrocada foi quando ele notou uma planta, que tinha o fim de representar um símbolo de cuidado, morta. Por um bom tempo, não soube o que dizer ou fazer.

Upon entering the Mo Gun, Si Fu discreetly assessed the rooms. Absolutely confident in the adequacy of the space for the moment we were about to experience that morning, I had personally coordinated its organization the previous day. I was caught somewhat off guard when he pointed out the first refinement. One of the items meant to honor the ancestors was misaligned with the center of the table. I promptly made the adjustment. From that point onward, we simply didn’t stop. Si Fu, at every opportunity, commented on an item that was out of place or needed refinement. Before long, I began to doubt my own ability to perceive details and even the thoroughness of the organization I had previously carried out. The height of my downfall came when he noticed a plant—intended to symbolize care—was dead. For a good while, I didn’t know what to say or do.

Então, a mestria. Situações de desconforto no ambiente marcial são comuns e até mesmo esperadas; elas são usadas, em geral, como cenários para fortalecimento do caráter e da resiliência. Nestas ocasiões, o melhor a se fazer é continuar o trabalho, neste caso, de refinamento pessoal.

So, mastery. Situations of discomfort in the martial environment are common and even expected; they are generally used as scenarios for strengthening character and resilience. In these moments, the best course of action is to continue the work, in this case, of personal refinement.

Note que esta reflexão trata da mestria. Ou seja, mestre é aquele capaz, independente da situação ou contexto, de extrair algum benefício e aprendizado. Como disse no início do texto, a parte que cabe ao ideograma 夫 (Fū) é subjetiva, por isso, é provável que você tenha uma conclusão diferente. Contudo, o que nos une, estimado leitor, não está no título ou na subjetividade do termo. Afinal, havemos de convir que o que faz com que o cuidado com o Mo Gun, ou qualquer outro, seja melhor realizado é justamente a continuidade de seu cuidado. Em outras palavras, de novo, o trabalho nos convida a trabalhar. Desta vez, profundamente atravessado pela experiência anterior.

Note that this reflection is about mastery. In other words, a master is one who is capable, regardless of the situation or context, of extracting some benefit and learning. As I mentioned at the beginning of the text, the part related to the ideogram 夫 (Fū) is subjective, which is why it’s likely that you may come to a different conclusion. However, what unites us, dear reader, is not the title or the subjectivity of the term. After all, we must agree that what makes the care of the Mo Gun, or any other, better carried out is precisely the continuity of its care. In other words, once again, the work invites us to work. This time, deeply influenced by the previous experience.

Por isso, sigo meu caminho, não só como mestre, mas praticante. Afinal de contas, se hoje tenho um título, é porque sigo meu caminho de trabalho. Este trabalho árduo e dedicado precisa ser leve e divertido. A ideia não é ficar obcecado, focado, simplesmente. Sobretudo agora que me encontro só. Afinal de contas, quando estamos sozinhos é, talvez, nosso momento de maior autenticidade. Então me desafio a ser autêntico e absolutamente adequado.

Therefore, I continue my path, not only as a master but also as a practitioner. After all, if today I hold a title, it is because I follow my path of work. This arduous and dedicated work must be light and enjoyable. The idea is not to become obsessed or simply focused. Especially now that I find myself alone. After all, when we are alone, it is perhaps our moment of greatest authenticity. So, I challenge myself to be authentic and absolutely appropriate.

E assim, sigo em frente, buscando, dia após dia, uma mestria que se reinventa e se aperfeiçoa a cada momento, porque, no fim, é o trabalho constante que nos faz verdadeiramente crescer.

And thus, I move forward, seeking, day by day, a mastery that reinvents and perfects itself with each moment, because, in the end, it is the constant work that truly allows us to grow.
